This year, Kimberly Image attachmentImage attachment

This year, Kimberly celebrated her 71st birthday on May 6, 2025, at Lilac City Adult Day Services. She woke in a great mood but had no idea that it was her birthday, and she was not aware that once she stepped off the Paratransit bus that morning, the folks who ran Lilac were waiting to celebrate her birthday. The Lilac folks take good care of Kimberly, making her feel comfortable and memorable, while she is in their hands.

Everyone pitched in to bake her a birthday cake. And it was an interesting-looking cake, to say the least.

In her first photo, she’s looking down because she is singing Happy Birthday with the gang. They played Monopoly Jr. What is interesting is the simple fact that Kimberly was an interior designer and salesperson for high-end furniture for 48 years. So, it was only natural for her to count and stack the play money—she doesn’t play the game. Her short-term memory is about 10 seconds, so she cannot follow or remember the game’s instructions. You can tell that she was having a great time.

The following day, I took her out to dinner for Southern BBQ food that our friends own. Boy, did she pork it down!

Because Mother’s Day was on the 11th, shortly after her birthday, she got pop-up cards from relatives for both occasions. I tell everyone pop-up cards are the best gift you can get her. Kimberly loves to read the cards, listen to the sound they make, watch the lights beam, and interact with them hourly and daily. The cake card was from her first cousin in TX, and the butterfly card is from my sister in NC.

Kimberly needs to be at Lilac City Adult Day Services because it allows her to socialize, which is very important for her well-being, and gives me well-deserved respite time. This is a monthly service that is paid in advance each month. Their rates are very reasonable compared to other Adult Day Services in Spokane, WA. Because this is an out-of-pocket expense, you have to make sure you have the savings or, if you're lucky to have long-term insurance, that it will help bankroll this commitment.

The downside is that these are Monday through Friday services. Kimberly, in reality, needs to socialize with others over the weekend, and I need respite time to get things caught up in my business and around the house. Hopefully, someone will come up with such a service for the weekends. The bottom line is that Kimberly needs this special care seven days a week, and I need the respite time.

That said, happy belated birthday and Mother’s Day to all the Kimberlys with Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia (BvFTD), and similar diseases.
